Nestled into the Bavarian Alps is the beautiful town of Bayerisch Gmain. This Bavarian town sits in the district of Berchtesgadener Land, which borders Austria, in the far south of Germany. Being a spa town, staying in Bayerisch Gmain is an excellent way to take some time out from the busy pace of modern life and get back to nature. Bayerisch Gmain hotels continue this theme with natural decor, hearty food and beautiful Alpine scenery.
Bayerisch Gmain sits between the mountains of Untersberg and Lattengebirge. Lattengebirge and lower parts of the nearby mountains provide visitors with some extensive hiking areas on the edge of the Alpine National Park. The Alps offer some outstanding views and landscapes that are a rich habitat for a number of species. As well as hiking, there are stores in the town where you can hire mountain bikes and climbing equipment, if you are looking for different ways to explore this beautiful area. In addition, there are a number of lakes in the area that are popular places to bathe in during the warmer months.
Bayerisch Gmain has been growing in popularity as a health and wellness destination. This is due to its proximity to the Bavarian state spa in Bad Reichenhall. It has historically been used to 'cure' all manner of ills, although in modern times it is used as a place of deep relaxation for its apparently restorative waters. This spa can be found high up in the Alps with some spectacular views and wonderfully fresh air. The waters here are thought to be good for visitors to the spa due to the natural salts in the spring that are drawn from the earth. It is the first town in Germany to be designated as an official Alpine Wellness location.
As well as 'taking the waters,' the spa offers a traditional sauna and beautifully manicured grounds that are a pleasure to explore. These grounds are where you can experience some of nature's wonder, including natural waterfalls and gorges, as well as more springs. The spa also offers a wonderful gourmet restaurant serving typical Bavarian fare and gastronomic delights.
The restaurants in the town serve some excellent local dishes. These are of a Bavarian origin and are normally focused around local meats. The typical cuisine that is on offer here includes Weisswurst, the Bavarian sausage, which is made from veal and bacon.
There are some really lovely places to stay in this town to make your visit even more special. Bayerisch Gmain hotels are typically Alpine with timber-framed buildings and country-style decor. From the moment you arrive at your Bayerisch Gmain hotel to the moment you depart, you will be treated to typical Bavarian hospitality and very friendly service.
Hotel rooms are normally decorated in a simple, elegant style. Many of these rooms include a balcony so that you can enjoy the spectacular Alpine scenery. There are family rooms available for visitors staying with children so that you can benefit from a little more space. Children will also enjoy the playgrounds that are available at many of the local hotels. Dogs can stay at some of these establishments too and they will enjoy long walks through the mountains.
Most of the hotels include a hotel restaurant that offers a range of Bavarian and international cuisine in comfortable, family-friendly environments. They will set you up with a home-cooked, hearty breakfast to give you plenty of energy to go exploring the mountains on foot or by bike.
Just across the Austrian border about twenty minutes away is the wonderful Austrian city of Salzburg, which is ideal for a day trip from Bayerisch Gmain. Salzburg is a truly cultural destination with plenty to see and do. It is known as a city of artisans and is most famous as the home of Mozart and many other great musicians, artists and writers. The Salzburg Festival is held each summer and runs for five weeks, celebrating the best examples of music and drama, with a distinctly Austrian feel. The festival attracts some of the best musicians, actors and playwrights from around the world and a large, appreciative audience. Salzburg is also host to a number of excellent art galleries where you can view great art works from local and international artists.
